Breach Breakdown: Pentagon

What happened:

The U.S. Department of Defense suffered a data breach affecting at least 30,000 service members and employees.  An unnamed third-party vendor was compromised exposing the personal and payment card information of the military and civilian workers.

The method and date of the attack are not known.  Pentagon leadership was informed of the breach on October 4 and is currently investigating the situation.  The system that was accessed maintained travel records and no classified data was involved.

The DOD notified all affected personnel and is providing free fraud protection services, per US legislation. The breach comes in a timely manner as a Government Accountability Office report, revealed that “the Pentagon’s upcoming next-generation weapons are very easy to hack due to improper cybersecurity protections.”
